Creating tabbed admin interfaces in Drupal using views

on Tue, 12/13/2011 - 9:54pm

Recently I tried creating a tabbed admin interface in Views - similar to the Content view where 3 tabs exist: Content, Commments, Media. It took a bit of futzing and reading, but ultimately found this:

  1. create page with path "parent" and with content that you would normally have for default tab, don't set up menu settings
  2. create page with path "parent/child1" and with content that you would normally have for default tab (SAME as "parent"), set it to be default tab and tell views Parent menu item: Already exists
  3. create page with path "parent/child2" and with content you want, set it to be menu

Drupalcon london presentation

This is a video recording of the session I gave in London titled Creating and Measuring the User Experience. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and failed to show case studies revealing how we've made Drupal better, but I'll follow up with a blog post.

Drupal 8 usability wish list

on Thu, 08/11/2011 - 2:06pm

Drupal has entered it's 8th cycle.  As such, Im regularly asked what I think the top usability issues are. Honestly, this is the first time I've put them down on paper, so this is a bit of a swag, but here it goes...

  1. Connect the dots.  This would be my over-arching theme of Drupal 8.  D7 gave us a hint of this where links to configure and permissions were provided in context after enabling a module, but there's so much more to do.  One example of this is creating a menu item through the menu itself; you have to know the URL in which you want to link to.

Using views, relationships and attachments

on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 6:13pm

This is a really excellent article that breaks down Drupal's Views module in to a digestible, easy to follow format.  Its using an older version of Views, but still really good.

Drupal Gardens is the latest online site creation tool.   It's not just any tool though - it's based on Drupal.  Not familar with Drupal?   In a nutshell, Drupal is becoming a phenominon because of its power, flexibility, rapid innovation, community and low cost.  Looking at the landscape today, it's clear why Drupal is taking off.

Site owners and builders across the globe are using small site building services like Wordpress, Joomla, Squarespace, Expression Engine etc, as well as enterprise services like Jive, Documentum, Sharepoint, etc.    In doing so, they're hitting hitting walls.
